Borje Salming ALS Foundation allocates 6.3 million Swedish kronor to Swedish ALS research
Five researchers affiliated with the Karolinska Institute, Royal Institute of Technology, Umeå University, and the University of Gothenburg have been awarded a total of 6.3 million Swedish kronor for research projects aimed at understanding and stopping ALS, as well as projects focused on improving care and support for those affected and their families.
- We are very pleased and proud that the foundation can already make a difference by supporting Swedish research in the fight against ALS, says Ulf Hedin, Scientific Coordinator at the Borje Salming ALS Foundation, as well as a professor and senior physician at the Karolinska Institute.
- The five researchers who have been awarded funding are all outstanding in their respective fields, aiming to better understand how the disease arises, find new treatment methods, improve ALS care, and provide support to those affected and their families.
The researchers awarded funding are:
Caroline Ingre, Karolinska Institute
Neuroprotective and neurotoxic T-cells in ALS
1.8 million SEK over three years
Christina Månberg, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)
Protein markers for predicting disease progression and survival in ALS
1 million SEK over two years
Karin Forsberg, Umeå University
The significance of protein structures in ALS - from biological studies to clinical trials
1.5 million SEK over three years
Per Zetterström, Umeå University
New treatment methods for ALS - studies of SOD1 prions to find new pharmacological targets
1.5 million SEK over three years
Anneli Ozanne, University of Gothenburg
Support intervention for families where a person is affected by ALS
500,000 SEK for one year
-We look forward to following these areas and will continuously be able to access the results of their work. To already distribute research funds during the foundation's first year of operation is thanks to the tremendous support the foundation has received since its inception, and we are very grateful for the opportunity and to be able to work in the spirit of Börje, says Ulf Hedin.
In early May, the Borje Salming ALS Foundation issued a call for research funding to finance basic scientific and patient-oriented research projects focused on the study of ALS causes, the development of new methods for medical treatment of the disease, and projects for innovative solutions that can facilitate the care of ALS patients.
The received applications were reviewed by the foundation's scientific council, which presented a proposal for the allocation of project funding to the foundation's board. Based on the scientific council's proposal, the board then decided which projects to support.
